Supernatural and the Unseen Realm

The Apostle Paul was righteously outraged by the fact that the believers at Corinth were taking their grievances to civil courts rather than to the church. In exasperation he said,

3 “Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!” (1 Cor 6.3)

The notion that believers will rule and reign with Jesus and that angels will be subservient to them is a vague idea to most believers. This is indeed unfortunate, since this fact is central to God’s plan of redemption. It is the end toward which the Holy Spirit is preparing the church.

The reason for this lack of understanding and appreciation is that modern Christians, particularly western Christians, downplay or do not believe in the supernatural realm. In effect they deny its reality. Because of that, the supernatural characters in the Bible are ignored, leaving significant portions of Scripture impenetrable to the average Christian.

That God rules through a divine council from his temple in the heavenly realm is well-attested to by Biblical and historical scholars, but its operation is largely unknown to the average Christian pastor, teacher and layperson. Fortunately, Michael S. Heiser, PhD, a Biblical scholar has arisen to remedy this situation. Dr. Heiser’s interests are Hebrew and Semitic languages, both canonical and noncanonical Second Temple Jewish literature, the Pentateuch, Wisdom Literature, Isaiah, Israelite religion (all stages) and Second Temple texts. He is now academic editor for Logos Bible Software.

Dr. Heiser has written the following books, among others, to present to the average Christian what until now has been known only to scholars. What one will read in these books will intensify one’s interest in and understanding of the Bible. Not only that, it will increase one’s conviction that the Bible is truly the inspired Word of God.
